Chapter 14

HI JOHN, my name is Sarah. Tell me something about yourself, Carlotta texted.

How did you get my number?

From a friend who thought I would like you. What do you do for a living?

I’m independently wealthy, made my money in tech.

At the sound of the doorbell, Carlotta set her phone on her desk, thinking Valerie and Prissy must be early. When she glanced out the side window and saw Coop, she grinned and opened the door. “Hey, you.”

“Hey, you,” he said, holding up a carton of coffees. “Time for a latte?”

“You bet, come on in.”

He stepped inside. “Should I have called?”

Carlotta took in his anxious expression and felt a little pang at his uncertainty. “No. Come by any time, day or night.”

He grinned. “Day or night, huh?”

She laughed, glad to see his teasing side again, then stretched up for a deep, wet kiss.

“Mmm,” he said. “What do I get if I bring donuts next time?”

“You’ll have to try and see what happens. Hey, you’re wearing the new tie.” The one she’d bought him during the shopping trip with Jack.

He picked up the end. “Yeah… because my girlfriend bought it for me.”

The word “girlfriend” triggered a strange reaction in her chest… which was crazy, because hadn’t she referred to Coop as her boyfriend to Mrs. Winningham?

Coop glanced toward the kitchen. “Is Wes around? I brought him a coffee, too.”

“No, he’s at the driving range, pretending to like it. But it’s better than hiding out in his room listening to sad music.”

“No news about Meg, then?”

“Nothing, and I know it’s killing him.”

“Yeah, I could tell yesterday when he stopped by the morgue he had a lot on his mind.”

She smiled. “Have I thanked you for arranging for him to work there?”

“Not today.”

She laughed. “Well, thank you. It’s the only thing he’s been excited about lately. Aside from Meg, of course.”

“I’ll be happy to have him. The other young guy we’re bring in is Bruce Abrams’s nephew, do you remember him?”

She squinted. “Dark hair, kind of weird?”

“That’s him. He worries me a little, so it’ll be nice to have Wes to rely on.”

“Let’s just hope everything with Meg turns out okay.”

Coop nodded. “What are you into this morning?”

“Working in my office. By the way, Mom and Prissy are coming by in a bit. Prissy wants to see my office. They’ll be happy to see you.”

“I’ll be happy to see them, too. How is your mom?”

“She seems to be doing great. I would say that she’s like her old self, but honestly, I think she’s better. She was drinking a lot back then, before they left.” Another reason why she might’ve put the locket under the Christmas tree—she hadn’t been thinking straight.

“It’s pretty.”

“Hm?”

He nodded to the locket she was rubbing between her thumb and finger. “I notice you wear it often. It suits you.”

“Thanks,” she murmured. “My mother gave it to me.”

“Does it have any pictures inside?”

“Um… not yet.” She reached for the latte and took a sip. “Mm, thank you.”

“What are you working on?”

Glad for the change of subject, she smiled.
